DigiTel’s Footprint Continues to Expand
Date: Thursday 31 July, 2008

Alaskan wireless carrier DigiTel is proud to announce that the company is the fastest growing wireless phone provider in the state. Through expansion of its network, opening of new stores and markets, and adding subscribers, DigiTel has positioned itself as a true competitor and carved a niche in the local market.

“Our primary objective was to grow the business in a significant way by raising the bar with respect to our network, our stores and our overall image,” said Jeff Roe, DigiTel’s Chief Operating Officer. “We experienced some growing pains by building and expanding so aggressively, but are pleased with what we’ve accomplished and excited about where we’re headed.”

In the past year, DigiTel has nearly doubled subscribers with major growth in late 2007 and early 2008. DigiTel lists several milestones that contributed to the growth:

  • In early 2008, DigiTel extended its coverage in Fairbanks and the surrounding area;

  • In the spring and early summer of 2008, DigiTel rebuilt its network in Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley and the Kenai Peninsula. During this rebuild, existing towers were upgraded and new towers were deployed in those three markets;

  • In 2008, DigiTel has opened Fairbanks as a market with two stores, improved and upgraded stores in Anchorage, opened a new store in Palmer, and opened the Kenai-Soldotna market with a new store in Soldotna;

  • DigiTel positioned itself in the market using an aggressive and alternative marketing campaign;

  • DigiTel has maintained continuous development of wireless products and technologies appropriate and appealing to the local market;

  • DigiTel introduced a new brand of pay-as-you-go wireless plans in March making wireless simple for people who don’t want contracts, deposits, or other hassles while still providing premium services like long distance, roaming, and data services;

  • By entering into an exclusive, multi-year agreement with Sprint Nextel, one of the nation’s largest carriers, DigiTel can provide customers with seamless service throughout the 50 states, including access to high-speed data.

Nick Miller, DigiTel’s Director of Engineering and Operations explains, “We’re making a large investment in our network, and we’re very proud of both our network coverage in new areas and in areas we knew we needed to improve. Drive tests are confirming tremendous improvements in network performance.” Miller went on to say, “Customers can expect better service and experience down Knik Goose Bay Road in Wasilla, in the Raspberry and Arctic neighborhood, at the Tudor Muldoon curve, and in the Fairview area of Anchorage.”

According to Miller, DigiTel plans to continue building out service along the Alaska highway system, in Kodiak, Ketchikan and Juneau throughout the rest of the year.

In addition to its aggressive multi-year coverage expansion project, DigiTel was the first in the Alaska market to deploy the most advanced mobile data platform with EV-DO Rev. A. This 3G network provides users speeds up to three times faster than AT&T’s network capability in Alaska. DigiTel will roll out products throughout the rest of the year that will give customers the chance to use this advanced data network.

“We’re definitely building what we think is the most advanced wireless communications network system in the state to date,” says Miller. “And we’re excited for even more advanced product capabilities in the near future.”
